Dantzler done calling baseball for year
Jeff Dantzler returned to his afternoon Athens sports talk show Monday, but won't return this season to Georgia baseball radio broadcasts.
Dantzler hasn't called Bulldogs games since a DUI arrest nearly two weeks ago and Georgia Athletic Association officials decided on Monday that the 36-year-old will remain off the air for this week's Southeastern Conference Tournament in Hoover, Ala., and the NCAA postseason.
"Our plan is to continue the remainder of the baseball season with David Johnston handling the play by play," associate athletic director Claude Felton said in an e-mail.
Johnston replaced Dantzler on play by play the past two weekends in series against Vanderbilt and South Carolina and the midweek game last week against Georgia Tech.
Georgia must approve the on-air talent for the baseball broadcast, Cox Radio Athens vice president/general manager Scott Smith said.
Dantzler also calls play by play for Georgia women's basketball and served as a color analyst on men's basketball, but it remains to be seen what role he'll have in future Bulldogs broadcasts.
"With a new radio rights agreement in the works, we'll evaluate the future talent for all our sports with the new rights holder," Felton said.
Georgia is close to a lucrative deal with ISP Sports for its media and marketing rights. Cox currently has Georgia's radio rights under a four-year contract worth $4 million per year.
Dantzler was arrested early the morning of May 7 on four charges including DUI alcohol, improper driving and driving with an expired registration. He is scheduled to appear on June 23 in Athens Municipal Court.
Smith said Dantzler had been off the air on AM 960 The Ref until Monday because of a "personal issue. He took some time away."
Reached by the Banner-Herald on Monday, Dantzler said Cox asked him not to discuss the situation with the media.
"I'm delighted to be back here on the afternoon show," Dantzler said at the start of his show Monday. He did not address his arrest, instead talking about topics ranging from Florida's Urban Meyer to Dantzler's conservative political leanings to Megan Fox and Scarlett Johansson.
